The Keffiyeh has become a symbol of resistance and unity. The history of the Keffiyeh dates all the way back to the Sumerians in Mesopotamia (3100 BC) when it was worn by priests as a symbol of honour and then through time it was adopted by peasants to protect them from the sun and sand.
The Keffiyeh was first used as symbol of resistance during the 1936 Arab Revolt against British rule. It was used to hide Palestinians’ identity to avoid arrest. This symbol strengthened during the Intifidas (1987 and 2000).
The embroidery of fish nets, waves of the sea and olive leaves all point to different aspects of the Palestinian identity. These all represent the relationship between Palestinians and the Sea.
From the river to the Sea, Palestine will be free.
